Meet the Mayor
Councillor Brian Coleman was elected on 19 May 2009 to be the 45th Mayor of Barnet at Hendon Town Hall following the Annual Meeting of the council. During his Mayoral year the Mayoress will be his mother, Mrs Gladys Coleman. Councillor Hugh Rayner was appointed Deputy Mayor, with his wife Susan as Deputy Mayoress.
During his mayoral year, Councillor Coleman will support two charities, The Larches Trust - a charity based in Edgware which provides support and opportunities for adults over 19 with learning difficulties - and Resources for Autism, a Temple Fortune-based charity which helps those with varying levels of autism.
Councillor Coleman has been a Totteridge ward councillor since 1998 and for the past three years has also held the Cabinet portfolio for Community Safety and Community Engagement. He has also held the position of London Assembly member for Barnet and Camden since 2000, serving as chairman of the Assembly twice in 2004/5 and 2006/7. He was previously Deputy Mayor of Barnet in 2004/5.
He is also governor of two borough schools - The Ravenscroft and Queen Elizabeth's Boys - and is a trustee of the Finchley Charities.
The new Mayor said: "It is a great honour for me to be able to step into this role and follow in the footsteps of many great Mayors that have had the opportunity to be the first citizen of this wonderful borough of ours.
"I am pleased to also have the opportunity to raise money for two very worthwhile causes."
