Meet the Mayor

The Mayor of Barnet, Cllr John Marshall

Councillor John Marshall took office at the Annual Council Meeting on 13 May 2008 at Hendon Town Hall. He is Barnet’s 44th Mayor and has been a Barnet councillor since 1998. He was previously a councillor on Aberdeen and Ealing councils.

In his Mayoral year Councillor Marshall’s Mayoress will be Rosie Daniels. Councillor Mukesh Depala will act as Deputy Mayor and his wife Sadhana will be Deputy Mayoress.

The Mayor has chosen as his charities Barnet Carers Centre (external link) and Chai Cancer Care (external link). Barnet Carers Centre supports informal carers who live or work in the London Borough of Barnet whilst Chai Cancer Care helps those suffering with cancer and their families. The Mayor's chaplain is the Reverend Alan Walker, vicar at the Parish of Saint Jude-on-the-Hill, Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Councillor Marshall was born in London and educated at Harris Academy in Dundee, Glasgow Academy and St Andrews University in Scotland, gaining an MA Honours degree. Working as a stock broker from 1970 until 1999, Councillor Marshall is now a financial journalist.

Prior to being elected to Barnet Council in 1998, Councillor Marshall was an elected member of both Aberdeen and then Ealing council and was made an Honorary Alderman of the London Borough of Ealing in June 2007. He was MEP for London North between 1979 and 1989, serving on the European Parliament’s delegations to Cyprus and to the Knesset. As MP for Hendon South between 1987 and 1997 Councillor Marshall served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Social Security between 1990 and 1992, and then the Leader of the House of Commons between 1992 and 1995.

He is divorced with two sons – Will (aged 28) and Tom (25). In his spare time Councillor Marshall enjoys bridge, reading biographies, spectator sports, the theatre and taking part in sponsored walks – he has completed over 30 walks for the North London Hospice.
