Barnet’s first major library opens its doors
The builders are out, the books are in and the floor is down. The new bigger and better Burnt Oak Library is now open. Officially launched on 22 October with a ribbon cutting ceremony from The Mayor the day was packed with fun activities for residents young and old.
What’s on offer?
The ground floor has been transformed into a state-of-the-art customer service centre with experienced staff on hand, while the first floor has been turned into Leading Library with facilities for all the family.
The customer service centre has been developed to serve the growing number of residents in the west of the borough that need to access:
- council services, including
- Housing Benefits
- housing advice and
- Council Tax.
There is also a self serve machine for people wanting to:
- pay bills, and
- a free repair line for Barnet Homes tenants.
In addition the Citizen Advice Bureau holds surgeries once a week and there is an array of forms and information available about other council services.
The library, which has been enhanced, has:
- a dedicated children’s section and
- wi-fi (wireless internet connection) throughout.
Also people who find it difficult to get about because of a disability will be able to access all the services by using the newly installed lift and ramps.
There is also an array of books, CDs and DVDs to borrow and loads of activities planned throughout the year, including story time and baby rhyme time for toddlers plus discussion groups for eager readers and talks from local authors and historians.
Memberships are available to anyone living in the borough, so for those of you haven’t yet joined please call in and see what’s on offer. Opening hours have been extended and the library and customer service centre now open all day Saturday and late night on a Thursday. This has been introduced to improve the accessibility for residents.
