Inspections of Children’s Services

Barnet’s Children’s Service is regularly inspected to ensure that we are delivering high quality services to children, young people and their families.

Overall rating

Every year Ofsted (external link) look at how well we are performing against national indicators, the results of inspections of parts of our service, and our key service documents. They give us a rating from ‘performs poorly’ (1) to ‘performs excellently’ (4).

In 2011 Barnet Children’s Service received an ‘excellent’ (4) rating. The letter from Ofsted can be seen here:

Detailed inspections

Every three years (sometimes more when changes are made to the way inspections are carried out) detailed inspections, known as Joint Area Reviews (JAR), are made of our services. Reports for the most recent inspections, made in May 2006, are below:

The first part of the social care process, when people make contact with the local authority, is inspected every year. It is called the ‘Unannounced inspection of contact, referral and assessment services' Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF 51KB). Barnet did well in 2010, with no areas for priority action.

Other inspections

Detailed inspections of the services we provide to children are also carried out:

Reference copies are available for viewing from our libraries. They can also be requested from Val White by using the contact details on the left.
