Safeguarding Children Board
Making Safeguarding Everybody's Business

Welcome to the Barnet Safeguarding Children Board (BSCB) web page
The BSCB is a multi-agency group that exists to ensure that children and young people are safe at home, in school and in the community whilst promoting the safety and welfare of all children in Barnet. It is an independent body with a statutory requirement to oversee the work of Barnet Council's Children’s Service and their partners and seeks to prioritise the well being of all children and young people within the Barnet area. The board prepared the 2010-11 Annual Report
(PDF:201KB ) which provides an assessment of the effectiveness of local arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
The structure of the BSCB is shown in the chart below:

Tim Beach is the Independent Chair of the BSCB which includes a wide range of key members from different organizations and communities in Barnet. The different members on the BSCB ensure that services work together effectively to:
- prevent harm to children and young people
- protect children and young people from harm
- promote the safeguarding of children within the community.
There are various different Sub-Groups that supports the work of the BSCB.
Youth Shield was previously known as the Barnet Children and Young People’s Safeguarding Board. However they changed their name to Youth Shield as it was felt that this was a more effective and powerful name that summed up the remit of the Youth Board. Youth Shield is the voice of children and young people and is an important part of the BSCB. The two Boards work together to 'Protect, Prevent and Promote!'.
The Safeguarding Division within Barnet Council's Children Service works closely with the BSCB in order to safeguard children and young people in Barnet. They also provide a quality assurance role in relation to services provided to children in care and children in need of protection.
Useful links and guidance for professionals
The Safeguarding Directory consists of a list of multi agency protocols to provide information and guidance to front line practitioners and managers working with children. All protocols are reviewed, audited and updated appropriately.
All Local Authorities in London follow the London Child Protection Procedures in order to ensure consistency across the capital. The procedures set out how agencies and individuals should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Their target audience is professionals (including unqualified staff and volunteers) and front-line managers who have particular responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The procedures are also aimed at senior and operational managers in all agencies providing or commissioning services for children, families and adults who are parents.
A variety of training options are available for all multi agency professionals, volunteers and any other people working with children and families. Alternatively, please contact the Children’s Workforce Development Team on 020 8359 6395/6393.
