Data Protection and Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives a right of access to a wide range of information held by public authorities. The Act came into effect in January 2005 and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) instructed all local authorities to operate a Publication Scheme in order to make routinely published information easily accessible to the public.

This is in addition to the Data Protection Act 1998 which gives individuals (data subjects) the right of access to information about themselves.  The Act regulates the use of personal information and places duties upon the council in terms of how we collect, process, store and disclose information about people.

If you have any queries about Data Protection or Freedom of Information, please contact the council's Information Governance Officer using the details found in the menu on the left.
