Electoral register
Have you registered to vote? Are you ready?
Remember, no vote = no say! Register today!
There will be elections coming up in the next year. Local elections for choosing a councillor must take place in May 2010. And by June 2010 there must be a General Election to chose an MP to represent you.
- Please note: make sure you register to vote and have your say.
If you haven't registered, or updated your details since 2008, you may not be on the register. This means you:
- you lose your right to vote, and
- you may have problems when trying to open a bank account or obtain credit.
How to register
You need to complete and return the form below:
- Registration of electors form (updated: February 2009)
(PDF: 86KB) to be listed on the Register of Electors
What you need to know:
- we publish a new Register of Electors on 1 December each year following a full canvass of every residential property in the borough
- canvass forms for this purpose are sent out in August/early September
- the 'rolling register': at other times of the year we process individual applications for registration and publish a monthly update to the register (shown below), with additions, deletions and amendments made to the annual register. This is done between January to September
- it takes about six weeks to take effect depending on when the application is received. These are the legally fixed dates for updating the register each month.

Two versions of the register are published. One is the full register which can only be used for electoral, law enforcement and credit reference purposes. The other is the edited version which does not contain the names of those people who have chosen to opt out of it. The edited register is available for sale to anyone for any purpose.
Who can look at the register?
The full register is available at the Electoral Registration Office. The electoral register is a public document and is open to inspection under strick supervision by electoral registration staff. The edited register is available at all libraries throughout the borough. The Electoral Registration Office can also confirm if a person is registered to a property.
