Why register?
If you do not register you cannot vote.
Did you know that registering your vote can help you with:
- opening a bank account
- mortgages
- loans
- store cards
- mobile phones
Yearly Annual Registration
The annual registration canvass has begun. This is when every household in the borough receives a registration form so you can confirm the list of all the people in your household are eligible to vote. The new register is then updated and published on December 1. When you receive this form you must respond to it as soon as possible using the following options:
- If there are no changes then you can register by the telephone or internet address that is printed on the form
- If you are registering for the first time at your property then return your form by post
- If you wish to add or remove residents details of make any other changes then return your form by post
- If you prefer to post the form rather than use the tepehone of internter, please make the necessary amendments to your form, then sign and return in the envelope provided
Failure to register by telephone/internet or post may result in your name(s) being removed from the register. By law you have to register every year. If you do not receive a registration form or If you require any further information please contact us using the details in the menu on the left.

What you need to know:
- we publish a new Register of Electors on 1 December each year following a full canvass of every residential property in the borough.
- canvass forms for this purpose are sent out in August/early September.
- the 'rolling register': at other times of the year we process individual applications for registration and publish a monthly update to the register (shown below), with additions, deletions and amendments made to the annual register. This is done between January to September.
- it takes about six weeks to take effect depending on when the application is received. These are the legally fixed dates for updating the register each month:

Two versions of the register are published. One is the full register which can only be used for electoral, law enforcement and credit reference purposes. The other is the edited verion which does not contain the names of those people who have chosen to opt out of it. The edited register is available for sale to anyone for any purpose.
Who can look at the register?
The full register is available at the Electoral Registration Office. The electoral register is a public document and is open to inspection under strick supervision by electoral registration staff. The edited register is available at all libraries throughout the borough. The Electoral Registration Office can also confirm if a person is registered to a property.
