New building work often requires two separate types of applications for permission. Barnet Council provides both of these services. Check whether you need to apply for either or both:
- Applications required under Planning legislation: The planning system aims to protect amenity and the environment in the interests of the general public. Councils seek to ensure that new developments are allowed where appropriate, while ensuring that the character and amenity of the area are not adversely affected.
- Applications required under Building Regulations: The Building Regulations set standards for the design and construction of buildings primarily to ensure the safety and health for people in or around those buildings, but also for energy conservation and access to and about buildings.
