1. When should I start thinking about a secondary school place for my child?

As your child reaches the end of year 5, you will be given an information leaflet about the forthcoming secondary transfer year.

2. How do I make my application for a secondary school place?

If you child attends a Barnet school, you will receive an application pack through the school. If your child attends an independent or out of borough school, then contact the Admissions Team for an application pack. From 3 September 2007 you can apply online (Your London external link).

3. How many schools can I apply for?

Up to a maximum of six.

4. How do I apply for a Barnet school if I live outside the borough?

You must apply on your own council Common Application Form (CAF). Some schools also require you to complete their supplementary information form. Check the local council secondary brochure to see if this applies.

5. How do I apply to schools outside Barnet?

If you live in Barnet but would like to name a school outside Barnet, you must list this as one of your six preferences on your Barnet form. Some schools also require you to complete their supplementary information form. Check the local council secondary brochure to see if this applies.

6. What address should be used on the application form?

The address where the child currently resides. If you move address, you must provide all the necessary proofs to your council's Admissions Team.

7. What if I am applying for a Church of England, Catholic or Jewish school?

Preferences for these schools must be listed on your Common Application Form. These schools also require you to complete their supplementary information forms. Contact the schools directly to get one.

8. What if I am applying for a selective school?

Preferences for these must be listed on your Common Application form. You also have to complete the school’s supplementary information forms and you may be required to sit tests at the school.

9. What if my child has a statement of special educational needs?

Please contact your SEN caseworker for an application form.

10. What is the latest date for applying for a secondary school place?

The closing date for application forms to be submitted to the borough is 19 October 2007.

11. What if a school receives more applications than it has places to offer?

The admissions authority for the school would use the published criteria to allocate their limit of places.

12. What should I do if I move house after making my application?

If you are moving elsewhere within the borough tell the Admissions Team. If you are moving to a different council, then you must tell both councils of your move.

13. When will I hear whether or not my application has been successful?

Letters will be posted out on 3 March 2008. If you have applied online the results will be viewable from 9am on 4 March 2008.

14. When must I accept or refuse the offer?

By 17 March 2008.

15. Are vacancies likely to arise at oversubscribed schools after the first round of offers?

If children are offered then it would be at one school only. However, there may be some children who accept a place in the independent sector or move away and do not require their place.

16. What can I do if I am still not offered a preferred school?

You have the right to appeal for a place at a preferred school. The Admissions Team can also tell you which schools in the borough still have vacancies.

17. Will my appeal be successful?

A panel will listen to your reasons why your child should attend a certain school. The school will give reasons why they cannot accept any more children. The panel will weigh up the reasons on both sides and decide whether to allow or decline the appeal.

18. Can I appeal again if I am unsuccessful?

Appeals can only be made once for each academic year, unless there is a change of circumstances.
