Why can't I recycle plastics and cardboard in the Black Box?

Plastic is very light and does not compact easily and cardboard is very light and bulky. It takes approximately 20,000 plastic bottles to equal one tonne and in comparison about 2,000 glass bottles make one tonne.

To collect plastic and cardboard from the Recycle from Home Black Box scheme we would require a large part of the vehicles to be dedicated to these materials. Unfortunately, our vehicles currently do not have the capacity for this.

We are aware that residents are keen for us to collect these materials at the kerbside and continue to look for ways in which this can be done.

In October 2008 we will be starting a new recycling contract. It is possible that plastic bottles and/or cardboard will be collected as part of this contract but nothing has been decided yet.

Plastic bottles and cardboard are collected at the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre, Summers Lane, N12. This is because the materials can be collected in large quantities and moved directly out of the site.
