Is there any financial assistance to help with the costs of caring for a child?
For siblings, older children or children with special needs, there can be an adoption allowance to help with the costs of caring for a child. The adoption allowance is paid weekly for as long as it is needed throughout childhood or it can be a one off payment to help with a specific cost e.g. therapy. Allowances are means tested.
There can also be financial help in buying necessary equipment (e.g. car seats) and furniture (e.g. beds) when the child first joins the family.
Adopters receive child benefit and can apply for tax credit, disability living allowance etc.
