What is an HMO?

Briefly an HMO is

  1. a premises occupied by more than one household and
  2. One of the households shares or lacks a basic amenity - toilet, bath / shower, or cooking facilities

What is a household?

Briefly a household means members of the same family.

So HMO’s include:

  • bedsits
  • houses partly converted into self-contained flats
  • hostels
  • accommodation above shops
  • shared houses and flats.
