What types of accommodation does the council offer?
Answer:
There are a number of housing options that older adults might like to consider if they feel their homes are unsuitable due to disability or medical reasons.
Designated alarm-assisted properties
Some homes are especially reserved for people over the age of 60. These are either studio or one-bedroom flats with an alarm link to the Lifeline operator 24 hours a day. Generally these homes are in quiet areas. The whole block may be reserved for older people or just the ground floor. There is a charge for the alarm service, but you may qualify for help with paying the charge
Sheltered housing
Barnet Council has a number of sheltered housing schemes for older people who have retired from work and want to live independently, but need the added security of sheltered housing. There are different types of sheltered housing - sheltered housing with a resident sheltered housing officer, an alarm system and sheltered housing with a visiting sheltered housing officer. There is a charge for the support provided, but you may qualify for help with paying the charge. These properties provide a safe and comfortable environment and offer the chance to broaden your social life if you wish.
