Health and safety at work - regulation and inspection
The Council is the enforcing authority for health and safety at work at most private sector workplacces in the borough. Our aim is to ensure that no-one is put at unacceptable risk by unsafe businesses. We use a variety of methods to achieve this. We give advice, investigate incidents and complaints, carry out special project work, and inspect local business premises to ensure that safe and healthy working conditions are provided.
Our officers are duly authorised and can show identification. They have the right to enter workplaces at all reasonable times and do not have to give prior notice. Following an inspection we will issue a written report to the dutyholder and may serve enforcement notices or prosecute if appropriate. We have an enforcement policy that anyone can see, and follow the Enforcement Concordat. We try to make our inspections and other regulatory activities as business-friendly as possible, and do not normally take enforcement action against employers who are doing their best to comply with the law.
