RSS feeds explained

What is an RSS News Feed?

A news feed allows you to see when a website has added new content. It keeps you up to date on the latest news, highlights and events published on the website without having to visit the site. Feeds are generally known as RSS which stands for 'Really Simple Syndication'.

There are different ways you can view the feeds, in general, the first thing you need is a news reader. Feed readers are built in to most web browsers, email applications such as Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, and some portal websites including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Live.

How to subscribe to an RSS Feed

When a feed is available for a section of content on our website, there will be a link to the RSS feed highlighted by an orange RSS button RSS Feed Icon.

If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways

  • cut and paste feed URL into a new feed in your news reader
  • some browsers, including Firefox, and IE7 automatically recognise the Feed URL and can make subscribing to feeds much easier.
