General safety precautions
Simple actions that could save your life
- Fit smoke alarms in your home. They are simple to install and could save your life.
- Ensure you have a complete first aid kit.
- Create an emergency contact on your mobile phone with the acronym ICE (In Case of Emergency) so emergency services can contact someone on your behalf.
- Ensure emergency contact details are accurate for you and for others. Does your place of work or your child’s school have your new mobile number? Have you supplied next of kin details?
- Ensure your family all know how to turn off the services (gas, water and electricity) at the mains.
- Do a risk assessment of your home, including any loft space, sheds, garages or cellars.
- Do you have any potentially dangerous chemicals or gas cylinders, empty or full? Are they in a safe place? Do you really need them? If not, arrange safe disposal. If you are in any doubt how to dispose of them, then contact the council.
- Consider training courses such as First Aid or a Fire Training course. To have the knowledge to treat an injured member of your family or having the experience and confidence to tackle a fire until the emergency services can arrive can save lives.
- Prepare an emergency grab-bag in case of sudden evacuation from your home. It should contain a mobile phone with charger, any essential medication, a torch with spare batteries, a spare set of house keys, and non perishable food and water.
