Evacuation
Advice in case of evacuation in an emergency
- Do not evacuate unless instructed to do so by the police, fire service, or council.
- Plan where to meet your family if you are away from your home and a disaster occurs in your area.
- Arrange an alternative place of safety: decide on two relatives/friends in different areas and not immediately local to you, who would be happy for you to use their homes as a meeting point. This means you have an alternative place if one is away or their home is not accessible.
- Identify the best evacuation route from your house and ensure that it remains free of obstacles that may prevent you leaving quickly and easily.
- Check on neighbours if you can - particularly if they are disabled or elderly.
- Pets? Think about what you will do with them. What will you do if you cannot take them with you?
- Insure your personal possessions.
- Keep safe your insurance company details (name, telephone number and policy number).
- Do not forget any prescription medicines you may need.
- After the initial alarm has been raised, do not call 999, unless it is absolutely necessary. Listen to the radio and watch the TV for information.
- If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the mains.
- If you can, tell key family and friends what is happening, and where you are re-locating.
- Secure your property on leaving.
Make a checklist of the items that you...
- need to take with you.
- can quickly gather together and can fit in a small bag or rucksack.
