Staying indoors
Important advice when staying indoors during an emergency
- Stock enough food and water in your home to feed your family for three days.
- Fill pots and pans with water as an extra reserve.
- Keep sufficient supplies of essential medication, such as inhalers, for example.
- Keep use of toilet cistern to a minimum, if there is likely to be water shortage or contaminated supplies.
- For emergencies involving a gas, chemical or radiation leak, keep windows closed, and sealed if possible with adhesive tape.
- Listen to the radio or watch TV for instructions. Follow these promptly.
- Are you deaf or hard of hearing, and would like to find out more about TV subtitling? Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) has more information.
- If possible, contact key family and friends to let them know what is happening.
Remember...
- Check on neighbours if you can - particularly if they are disabled or elderly.
- After the initial alarm has been raised, do not call 999, unless it is absolutely necessary. Listen to the radio and watch TV for information.
