Dealing with the threat of terrorism

The London bombings of July 7, 2005, followed by a series of failed attacks later the same month, brought home the reality of living under the threat of terrorism for people in the capital.

There are, of course, extensive pan-London plans already in place to deal with such incidents but Barnet has also made local contingency plans for major events and is in regular contact with its partners in neighbouring councils, the police, fire and ambulance services and the Primary Care Trust (PCT).

In the event of a major incident directly affecting the borough and its residents, the council would assist the emergency services through a number of methods, including the setting up of rest centres, supporting other services on issues connected to environmental health and highways and the dissemination of information and directions to the public through its electronic noticeboards, the internet or other means available to council officers.

If you see anything suspicious, or have information which you believe may help anti-terror police, call the Anti-Terrorism Hotline on 0800 789321.

There is always the danger of being affected by an act of terrorism while living in one of the major capital cities of the world, but many previous experiences have shown us that any disaster only makes us stronger and brings out the community spirit that makes London a great city.
