Grants to voluntary & community organisations 2011/12
Start up & one off grants
The Corporate Grants Programme offers grants of up to £10,000 to help either;
- set up a new project or activity in Barnet in response to identified needs,
- or with specific events, purchases or other non-recurring items of expenditure,
where a proposal complements one or more of the council’s key corporate priorities or Barnet’s Sustainable Community Strategy select the links below for further information.
Start up grants
- These are for a maximum of one year and may contribute towards capital and revenue costs.
- Applications must be accompanied by a funding plan from year two onwards showing how the proposal will be maintained once the council’s grant ends.
One off grants
- These may be subject to matching funding depending on the purpose for which help is sought and the amount required.
Outcomes
To qualify for consideration, applicants must show how a proposal aims to achieve at least one of these criteria;
- support people to be independent and lead active lives
- strengthen individuals’ resilience in challenging times
- promote health and health outcomes
- support people in changing behaviour (such as substance misuse or physical inactivity)
- promote mixed communities (ensuring residents continue to feel that Barnet is a place where people from different communities get on together)
- help to make sure that Barnet remains a safe and healthy place to live, work and study
- reduce crime
- reduce inequalities
- create the conditions for children to develop skills to develop skills and acquire knowledge to lead successful adult lives
- protect and enhance the natural and built environment so that the borough is clean and green
- promote waste minimisation
- ensure that town centres are vibrant places where business can thrive.
Characteristics
Proposals will be enhanced if they demonstrate:
- maximum value for money (clear outcomes for customers; high quality, flexible and responsive services; etc)
- that services are designed around evidence of local need and the preferences of potential users
- that services complement but do not overlap with existing or planned public sector provision
- that services can be tailored to the needs of individuals
- ease of access
- that they are well interfaced with public sector services, where relevant
- a focus on prevention
- a commitment to sharing data with the public sector to facilitate insight into the needs of residents
- that potential service users are involved in the design / and or running of services

Deadlines to apply
Applications will be assessed on a quarterly basis. The deadlines for 2011/12 are:
- 1 April 2011 for a decision by 15 June 2011
- 1 July 2011 for a decision by 15 September 2011
- 1 October 2011 for a decision by 15 December 2011
- 1 January 2012 for a decision 15 March 2012
The Milly Apthorp Charitable Trust
Funds administered by the council
The funds administered by the council (the Administered Fund, the Holidays Together Scheme and Adventure Fund) are now closed to new applications.
Funding that has been committed up to 2012 through awards previously approved will continue to be paid subject to fulfilment of all obligations and compliance with any conditions attached to awards.
The Milly Apthorp Continuation Fund
A residual fund called the ‘Milly Apthorp Continuation Fund’ has been created to maintain some of the trustees’ work in the borough for a further five years.
The funds comprise provision (a) for specific services, projects or schemes selected by the trustees and (b) grants to voluntary and community groups under a restricted range of categories.
There is no longer any provision for funding local residents on an individual basis.
The services and projects supported include:
- the LBB Care & Repair Scheme for Elderly People
- the Schools’ Instrumental Teaching Service
- the Creative Routes Art Project for School Children
- a Furniture Recycling Scheme created by Barnet Homes
- the development of volunteering opportunities for young people by Barnet Volunteer Centre
- childcare for students through the Elizabeth Allen Trust.
Other provision made includes:
- a one-off grant of £70,000 to the Grassroots Grants Programme administered by the North West London Community Foundation (external link) to help create an endowment fund for grants to smaller voluntary groups with effect from April 2011
- an annual contribution of £5,000 to the Mayor’s Benevolent Fund.
New Grants to Voluntary and Community Groups
Grants may be sought by voluntary and community groups for:
- the provision of sports activities or recreational projects for young people aged 7 to 17 who would not normally have access to sport outside school and home or are not engaged in mainstream activities
- outings for elderly people.
Application is by way of a letter with full project details and a budget to Jenny Bunford at CommUNITY Barnet, 52 Moxon Street, Barnet, Herts, EN5 5TS.
The trustees will meet twice a year to consider applications in April and October.
