Clinical waste disposal
Barnet Council collects and disposes of clinical waste for residents and trade customers
What is clinical waste?
•Human or animal tissue
•Blood or other bodily fluids
•Drugs or other pharmaceutical products
•Swabs or dressings
•Syringes, needles or other sharp instruments
Guidance for Residents
Residents must be referred by their GP in order to receive this service.
Residents under the care of a health professional
If patients are treated in their home by a community nurse or a member of the NHS profession, any waste produced as a result is considered to be the health professional’s waste.
The health professional should remove the waste and take it back to the trust base for appropriate disposal.
Self medicating residents
Self medicating residents not under the care of a health professional should call 0208 359 5045 to arrange a collection (only if the waste it is not of the type stated in the ‘Exemptions to Collection’).
There is currently no charge for the collection and disposal of residential clinical waste.
Exemptions to Collection
Excretions including nappies, incontinence pads and stoma bags are offensive and unhygienic but they are not classed as clinical waste and do not need to be collected or treated separately.
These items can be placed (wrapped) in with the normal household rubbish collection.
Guidance for Trade Customers
Please call 0208 359 5045 to arrange collection.
Customers will be charged £6 per item collected and will have to sign a trade waste agreement.
Waste may be subject to inspection by the disposal authority.
Barnet is reviewing the current pricing structure as regulations regarding the disposal of this type of waste have become more stringent and the associated disposal and administration costs have increased significantly.
