Licences and street trading
We administer and issue a variety of licenses, registrations, approvals and permits relating to a range of activities and businesses. These activities range from placing a builder's skip on the highway to running a zoo. Not all licenses are administered by Barnet Council; some licenses such as taxi licensing and petroleum licensing are issued by other agencies.
Premises licenses
Premises licences for businesses that sell alcohol, offer regulated entertainment or sell hot food after 11 pm are administered by the council.
Review of a premise licence/club premise certificate
The Licensing Act also provides a provision whereby existing licences can be called in for review. Local residents and businesses may have the right to ask for a review as do the nominated responsible authorities, or to take part in a review already in progress. The outcome of a review may be the suspension, amendment or revocation of the licence.

Licensing policy
The council's Licensing Policy was published in January 2008 after wide consultation and will be reviewed every three years. It sets out our approach to the Licensing Act 2003. We aim to strike a balance between the rights of businesses, the rights of their customers to enjoy the services offered, and the rights of everyone to protection from badly managed licensed premises.

The Licensing team deals with many of the licenses that may be issued by the council. We can:
- provide application forms and information and advice about applications, fees, how to apply, whether a licence is needed and how to advertise an application;
- provide information about existing licenses and current applications;
- receive representations either in favor of or against a licence application;
- deal with requests for a review of a licence in accordance with the Licensing Act 2003;
- respond to complaints about licensed premises or premises trading without a licence.
