Naming ceremonies
Naming ceremonies are celebrations to mark the birth of a new baby. They give the chance to announce the child’s name and enable adults to promise a supportive role through to adult life.
Ceremonies can be tailored to meet the individual requirements of the family, with a wide choice of poems and readings available. A souvenir record of the ceremony will be signed and presented during the event.
Any parent can arrange a naming ceremony whether they are married or not. It is a non-religious ceremony. The ceremony can be held at a register office or an approved venue. Neither the naming ceremony nor any document issued has any legal status.
Consult the local register office for advice if you wish to change the names of your child from those given at the original registration of the birth. Only those with parental responsibility for a child can change the child’s name.
The birth must be registered and the full birth certificate must be produced when booking the ceremony. Naming ceremonies cost £160.
