Children centres

Children’s Centres will enable:

  • Every child under five years old to have the best start in life
  • Parents to have choice in work and family responsibilities
  • Parents to have access to available, flexible and affordable childcare

Children’s Centres aim to give every child aged under five the best start in life, as part of the national commitment that by 2010 all families should have access to one stop shop type support at a children’s centre so that “childcare and education, health and employment advice and parenting support are in easy reach of every parent”.

What will Barnet’s Children’s Centres provide?

  • Early Education with affordable childcare led by a qualified teacher, at times that suit parent’s needs.
  • Access to local Childminding Network.
  • Lifelong learning opportunities for parents, and advice on employment.
  • Family Support and information, including parenting workshops and drop-in groups.
  • Health services and advice including support before and after the birth of a baby.
  • Access to specialist services, such as support for children with disabilities or those with particular needs.

There are currently 13 Children’s Centres in Barnet which provide a range of integrated services or act as a gateway to these services depending on the local need. A further nine Children’s Centres are proposed for 2008/10.
