Children's centres

Children’s Centres aim to give every child aged under five the best start in life, as part of the national commitment that by 2010 all families should have access to one stop shop type support at a children’s centre so that “childcare and education, health and employment advice and parenting support are in easy reach of every parent”.
Barnet’s Children’s Centres provide:
- early education with affordable childcare led by a qualified teacher, at times that suit parent’s needs
- access to local Childminding Networks
- lifelong learning opportunities for parents, and advice on employment
- family Support and information, including parenting workshops and drop-in groups.
- health services and advice including support before and after the birth of a baby
- access to specialist services, such as support for children with disabilities or those with particular needs.
- outreach services for isolated parents/carers and children at risk of social exclusion
- information and advice
- activities for children and mothers and fathers/carers at the centre
- links with Jobcentreplus

Phase 3 Children’s Centres:
All Phase 3 Children Centres will be situated outside the most disadvantaged areas and will therefore offer a less intensive level of support than Phase 1 and 2 centres which service families in the 30% most disadvantaged areas.
There is a universal level of service that must be provided in phase 3 areas. It is important that families, no matter what their situation, feel the benefit of better integrated, accessible services delivered through the children’s centre in their community. In the main, children centres will build on existing private, voluntary, independent or statutory services for children and families; for example schools, health centres, nurseries and family centres.
Range of universal services:
- outreach services for isolated parents/carers and children at risk of social exclusion
- information and advise
- support to childminders
- activities for children and mothers and fathers/carers at the centre
- links with Jobcentre plus
- access to community health services.
