Office for Standards in Education
It is the role of Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) to register and inspect all childcare providers, including:
- childminders
- nurseries
- playgroups
- out-of-school and holiday clubs
- registered creches
Ofsted ensures that the childcare providers meet the requirements as set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
The aim of regulating childcare:
- protect children
- ensure that childcare providers make provision that meet legal requirements
- ensure that providers help children to be healthy and safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and develop skills for the future
- promote high quality care, learning and development
- provide reassurance for parents
Childcare services are checked once by Ofsted before they are registered, and then inspected regularly to ensure they maintain their standards. This reassures parents that they are placing their children with adults who are suitable to do the important job of caring for their children.
Complaining about a childcare provider
If you are concerned that a childcare provider is not meeting the required standards, you should first raise your concern with the childcare provider as they are required to investigate all complaints made in writing or in electronic form. If you feel that you cannot discuss your concern with the childcare provider, contact Ofsted directly on its Complaints Line: 08456 40 40 40.
