Holocaust Memorial Day 2008

Barnet commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day in January 2008 with a two-week exhibition and a memorial service, to allow Barnet residents to remember and reflect on the atrocities committed during the Holocaust in their own way.
An art installation of more than six million buttons was exhibited in Barnet - the first time it's been shown in London.
The unique work, entitled ‘Six Million +’, was created to signify the industrial scale of the genocide which resulted in six million Jews being killed during World War II, was created by Leeds-based artist Antonia Stowe, and most of the buttons were collected from schools, colleges and local residents in West Yorkshire. It was originally commissioned by Kirklees Museums and Galleries.
Holocaust Memorial Day Service

The annual Holocaust Memorial Day service took place at the Ricketts Quadrangle for the second year in succession. The event was open to the public and was attended by the Mayor, Councillor Maureen Braun. This was the seventh annual service and 800 people attended last year’s event.
This year’s theme was entitled, ‘Imagine…remember, reflect, react’ and guests were encouraged to remember the past, reflect on the present and react to create a better future. The service also reflected on more recent genocides.
