Barnet in Bloom 2008

We encourage all sectors of the community, from private garden owners to large businesses, to become actively involved and take pride in the enhancement of the borough.
This may be achieved by providing bright and colourful planting schemes, which contributes to making the Borough a better place in which to live and work.
As a greener, cleaner borough we care for our environment, with our commitment to recycling, reducing litter and water conservation.
There are prizes to be won across a wide range of categories. Only displays visible to the passing public will be judged. It is not necessary to have a large front garden or years of gardening expertise.
There are a variety of categories for all to enter:

Best Front Garden
Be Creative! - We are looking for a high-impact display with masses of vibrant coloured plants planted in a front garden and can be enjoyed and easily seen by passers-by. Note: at least three quarters of the plants need to be planted in the garden not in containers for this category)
Most Eco-Friendly Garden
Go green! We are looking for innovative and creative gardens that are sustainable, and original. Create a relaxing “green space” for you, your family and friends. This includes using natural resources, which encourages the growth of plants: flowers, herbs, and welcomes insects or wildlife. Having bird feeders available for the birds is an option. This is also your opportunity to recycle objects by using them in the garden.
Best Balcony Display
Transform your Balcony - we are looking for vivid and dazzling hanging baskets, troughs and or window boxes filled with a variety of plants and an abundance of colourful flowers for all to enjoy.
Best Floral Display
Create an interesting and colourful Floral Display in a variety of containers. This can be done in a garden. Please note: three quarters of the display should be planted in containers for this category. Make it original by recycling, using unwanted objects and containers and making them into planters - for example: old watering cans, jugs, pots and car tyres can make it interesting.
Best Communal Gardens
Create a colourful garden as a community project by planting shrubs, and/ or a variety of plants and flowers for all to admire. It is a lovely way for neighbours to work together as a “team effort”. You can enter by street, square, close, cul-de-sac, mews or any group of residences. This can include sheltered, warden-assisted premises or allotments.
Best Bloomin’ Business, Restaurant, Pub or Commercial Premise
This category is open to all businesses within Barnet. We are looking for stunning, lively floral displays presented in containers, hanging baskets or flower beds that brighten and enhance the front of your premises and that creates a “wow factor”.
Best Garden of Floral Display - outside a place of worship
Take this opportunity to create a welcoming and colourful garden or entrance at your place of worship! This category is open to all denominational communities within the borough.
Best School Garden
This category is open to all schools and colleges in Barnet. We are looking for educational gardens or outdoor space where students worked collectively to make a notable change to the environment – by planting a variety of plants or shrubs, flowers and/or vegetables.
We are looking for sustainable gardens, which encourage growth and wildlife. This could be by creating a bird feeder to encourage birds to the garden, and by using recyclable items within the garden. Educational gardens can be used for education and they can be designed with teaching and learning in mind.
