Putting a stop to faith hate crime
- All crimes against a person because of their religion or faith are defined as a hate crime.
- Barnet is an extremely diverse borough and we believe that everyone has the right to live, work, socialise and worship in a safe and secure environment.
- Barnet Council, therefore, is committed to working with a range of partners representing a range of Barnet's diverse communities.
- Harassment can come in many different forms and can include physical violence, hate mail or verbal abuse.
If you are being abused or harassed because of your faith, then this is a crime and must be reported.
Even if you do not want action taken it is still important that you report all incidents of hate crime on yourself or ones that you may have witnessed.
How do I report an incident?
- There are many ways in which you can report a hate crime. In an emergency, dial 999.
- Alternatively, you can report all hate crimes to the Community Safety Unit at Colindale Police Station by calling 020 8733 5156
- You do not have to go to a police station to report a hate crime; incidents can be reported at one of Barnet’s many third party reporting sites

How seriously does the Safer Communities Partnership take the issue?
The Safer Communities Partnership (SCP) is committed to tackling faith crime, along with any other hate crime which occurs in the borough. The Gold Community Concern Group is a multi-faith group, chaired by the Barnet borough police commander, which looks into issues surrounding hate crime and discusses issues like terrorism and crime prevention.
The SCP also supports the Multi-Faith Forum, which was set up by representatives from the many faith communities resident in Barnet to help promote understanding and harmony.Meetings have covered subjects such as attacks on faith communities, but discussions even range outside faith issues - as members have expressed their views on a plethora of topics including the regeneration projects in Cricklewood and West Hendon.
You can contact the chairman of the forum, Bernd Koschland, by calling 020 8203 5527.
