Racial harassment
Putting a stop to race hate crime
We are determined to stamp out racist hate crime in the borough and ensure a safe environment for our multi-cultural and diverse population. Racism has no place in any civilised society, and Barnet has a number of mechanisms in place to stop this type of crime from occurring.
We have a dedicated hotline which victims of racial harassment can call to report crime, and has also printed Racial Harassment - Don't Accept it. Report it.
(PDF: 108KB) on how to make a report. You can call the hotline on 020 8359 5620 between 9am and 5.15pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 5pm on Fridays. Calls are dealt with and investigated by the Safer Communities Team.
What is the council doing to combat the causes of racial harassment?
The Multi-Agency Racial Harassment Group (MARHG) was set up several years ago, and is a forum for voluntary and statutory agencies to meet and discuss local and national racism issues, as well as studying data of trends and patterns in the borough and agreeing actions that will help tackle and reduce race-related crime.
There is a Barnet Racial Incident Action Group (BRIAG) which looks at higher-profile and more complex cases and feeds back its findings to the MARHG.
The council also has its own equality and diversity policy.
Other ways to report a crime
As with all hate crimes, victims can report incidents directly to the Community Safety Unit (CSU), staffed by specially trained officers. The CSU is based at Colindale Police Station in Grahame Park Way, and can be contacted on 020 8733 4465 between 8am and 10pm Monday to Friday. Victims can also visit one of the borough's third party reporting sites
