Where are we now?

The mid point in developing Barnet’s core strategy has been reached.

This important document sets the direction for the next 15 years in terms of where the borough will grow and where it will be protected and enhanced. It sets out when change will happen and what is required to make it work. You now have the chance to comment on this key document which will have an impact on all the borough’s residents, businesses and visitors.

The Local Development Framework (LDF): core strategy - direction of travel report Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF: 1.5MB) contains the vision, objectives and policies to guide development, emphasising the borough’s many strengths and taking forward the principles of:

  • protecting open space and the green belt
  • enhancing the borough’s quality suburbs and identifying areas of special character
  • promoting some town centres for development

We have identified 14 policies which cover the priorities for Barnet as a growing and changing place. A summary of the 14 strategic policies is provided:

Background

The Local Development Framework (LDF) will guide future development in the borough. It is a folder of planning documents that will replace Barnet's Unitary Development Plan (UDP). The most important document within the LDF is the Core Strategy. This will contain the ‘vision’ for the LDF and the most fundamental, cross-cutting objectives and policies that the local authority and its partners will seek to deliver.

Our first consultation on the Core Strategy was the Issues and Options which was held between 30 June to 29 September 2008. The LDF core strategy: issues and options consultation report, November 2009 Help on Downloading PDFs (PDF: 493KB) provides feedback on the main strategic issues highlighted by the 23,000 comments received last year on the issues and options consultation. This has helped us to produce our LDF core strategy - direction of travel document.

Next stages

  • Summer 2010: following engagement on this stage, we will publish another version of the LDF core strategy (known as the publication stage) for final public consultation prior to submitting it to the Planning Inspectorate in Summer 2010.
  • Late 2010 - examination: The Core Strategy will then be subject to an examination in public in late 2010
  • Early 2011 - adoption: the LDF core strategy as a document for making planning decisions, is expected to be adopted in early 2011.
