Who should register?

If you have just moved you will need to submit a registration form.  You will need to supply details of your old and new address.

On your registration form you should register:

  • Anyone over 18
  • Anyone in your house who is 16/17 - they will be allowed to vote as soon as they have their 18th birthday. Please give their date of birth.
  • Anyone who normally lives in your home but is temporarily away
  • Anyone who is working away from home for less than six months
  • Students, if this is their normal home address out of term time
  • Lodgers and anyone else who lives in your home (but not short stay visitors).

Eligible European Union countries

European Union citizens have the right to vote at local elections in the UK and European parliamentary elections.

* Cyprus is part of the Commonwealth and all Cypriots (including Turkish Northern Cyprus) can register to vote.  Cyprus and Malta are EU countries, but are commonwealth states with full voting rights.

** Zimbabwe has announced that it wished to withdraw from the Commonwealth.  However, this does not alter the voting rights of Zimbabweans.  Zimbabwe is listed as a member of the Commonwealth.

In the British Nationality Act 1981 and unless that Act is amended, citizens of Zimbabwe resident in the United Kingdom remain qualifying Commonwealth citizens.

A visa allowing indefinite stay in the UK is not the same as citizenship.
