Housing in Barnet

A decent home provides the bedrock for a successful community, and the Council has an important part to play in ensuring that housing is provided that meets the needs and aspirations of Barnet residents.  Our analysis of a range of Housing data has shown that:

  • Barnet’s population is expected to grow rapidly over the next ten years
  • Demand for all types of Housing in Barnet is high
  • Over two-thirds of Barnet households own their own home
  • About 15% of all Barnet households rent privately
  • A high proportion of new properties are flats or apartments
  • House price inflation has seen house prices increase dramatically since 2001
  • Average House prices remain higher than the outer London average
  • Although homelessness has reduced, there are still large numbers of people in temporary accommodation
  • Home ownership is beyond the reach of many residents
