Barnet's environment and land use
Each year the council publishes an Annual Monitoring Report (AMR) to check on progress in meeting the objectives of its Unitary Development Plan (UDP). The UDP is a statutory document that describes how the council will govern physical developments and land use in Barnet over the next ten years, but is in the process of being replaced by the Local Development Framework.
Section 2.3 of the AMR describes the existing characteristics of the borough under the following headings:
Demographic structure: population size, household types, ethnic composition and social groups.
- Socio-economic issues: crime rates, unemployment levels and deprivation.
- Economy: economic activity rates, household income, house price level, productivity and employment.
- Environment: key assets in the natural environment.
- Housing and built environment: housing stock conditions and quality and assets of the built environment.
- Transport and spatial connectivity: transport accessibility, regional hub, spatial inequality/uneven distribution of activities.
The main body of the report includes sections on:
- Business development
- Housing
- Environmental quality
- Waste
