Sustainable Design and Construction
The council has prepared a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on Sustainable Design and Construction (see documents below) as part of the emerging Local Development Framework.
The SPD will supplement the policies and proposals in Barnet's Unitary Development Plan (adopted in May 2006) and the Mayor of London's London Plan as the basis of planning decisions in the borough.
The Local Development Framework (LDF) will gradually replace Barnet's Unitary Development Plan.
- We have also prepared a Sustainability Appraisal (see documents below) to accompany the SPD. This explains why the council has prepared the SPD.
- As required by the Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) Regulations 2004, an Adoption Statement (see documents) has been prepared.
The Sustainable Design and Construction SPD was subject to consultation between November 2006 and January 2007.
The Consultation Statement (see documents) describes the how this was conducted. The council's responses to the comments received during the consultation exercise are contained in the Representation Statement (see documents).

Sustainability checklist for householder and minor developments
Applicants for planning permission are required to have considered the Sustainable Design and Construction SPD in preparing their planning applications, and must show how their proposals contribute toward sustainable development in the borough. The checklist (
PDF 126KB) contained in the SPD guides planning applicants through this process and must be submitted with any planning application.
