Adopted Unitary Development Plan, Nov. 1991
Barnet's current UDP was adopted by the Council in November 1991 and covers the period up to 2001. Since 1991, Government planning policy has changed and new legislation has been introduced for London.
There are new policies on transport, shopping, town centres and affordable housing. Sustainable development is now a key objective of the planning system, which aims to ensure a better quality of life for present and future generations, whilst encouraging a more equitable society. In London, the Greater London Authority (GLA) has been established and has drawn up its Spatial Development Strategy called The London Plan with implications for all the capital's local planning authorities.
Research suggests the lifestyle of people has also changed since Barnet's first UDP was adopted. For example, there have been changes in the composition and size of households, the type and nature of employment, shopping, leisure and travel patterns. The UDP needs to be updated to reflect these changes, as well as new Government policies.
