First Class Schools

Five smiling young children from Whitings Hill School wearing their uniforms and construction helmets.First Class is the name of the programme which is building new, high quality schools for Barnet. These include the six new primary schools which were in the first wave of PSCIP – the former Primary Schools Capital Investment Programme – to which have been added two other primary schools, a children’s centre, and the new secondary school at East Barnet.

First Class Schools also includes school redevelopment and extension work in Colindale and Edgware.

The full list of schools which are currently being rebuilt is as follows:

  • Whitings Hill, Barnet: the first of the former PSCIP schools. Site work is underway on a new school, a nursery and swimming pool. It is due for completion in Autumn, 2009
  • Parkfield, Hendon: the existing school at Hendon is being demolished and replaced with a new two form entry school and it is due to open in September 2009
  • The Hyde, Colindale: the existing school at West Hendon is to be demolished and it will also be rebuilt as two form entry, as well as a nursery. It too is due to open in September 2009
  • Underhill, Barnet: the remaining infant and junior schools will remain. New construction will provide a children’s centre, nursery and reception classes.  The centre is due for completion in Spring, 2009
  • East Barnet School: contractors plan to complete the new building for the combined secondary school, which will have 1,350 students, by 2010.
