Admissions for entry into school in September 2012
You should start thinking about your child starting in a reception class in the September following their third birthday.
If your child was born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 you need to apply to your home council for a place in a primary school for the 2012/2013 academic year.
- From 1 September 2011 you can apply online (eAdmissions external link).
- If you would prefer a paper form you can contact the Admissions Team on 020 8359 7651 to request an application pack.
- You will automatically receive application guidance if your child already attends a Barnet nursery class.
- The closing date is 15 January 2012.
- You will be posted a letter on 18 April 2012 notifying you of the outcome (online results will be available in the evening of 18 April).
Making your application – important points to remember
- You can list a maximum of six schools in the order you prefer them, there is no advantage in listing only one school. You are strongly advised to include at least one local community school as one of your preferences to ensure that your child secures a school place for 2012/13.
- If all the preferences you make are unrealistic you are unlikely to secure a place at any of the named schools.
- You will be told why you have received an offer or a refusal, and where relevant, parents can stay on waiting lists and appeal against the decisions not to offer places.
- Once you have been offered a place at a school of your preference your child will not normally be considered for alternative lower ranked schools and you would not be expected to appeal for a place at these schools.
- From mid-May 2012, the council will retain waiting lists for the oversubscribed community schools and accept further applications for community schools with vacancies. The council will make further offers from the waiting lists as and when places become available.
- Please remember that only a small number of places are expected to become available to offer after 18 April 2012 at schools that are full. This is because few children will receive more than one offer on that date.
- If you are a Barnet resident whose child has not been offered a place at one of your preferred schools and you do not wish to accept a place at a Barnet school that has vacancies, you will become responsible for securing suitable education for your child.
- If you are not a Barnet resident you must apply for a school place on the Common Application Form provided by the borough in which you live. Check neighbouring borough admissions for further information.
- If you are not offered a place at your preferred school, you have the right of appeal.
