How much shelving is needed?
Guidelines page 3
- shelving should be no higher than 1500mm
- 1200mm is better especially for island shelving units which, space allowing, can have more impact than shelving against walls
- include display (outward facing) shelves
- SLRS assumes capacity is approximately 100 information or picture books per 900mm length of shelf, or 50 fiction hardback titles and assumes a quarter of the stock will be on loan at any one time
- amount of shelving needed can be estimated by multiplying recommended resource levels by capacity of shelves chosen
- allow for 1000mm circulation space between units
- add special units for big books and picture books (kinder boxes) .
