Description
A formal Edwardian park forming the grounds of Friary House. It contains quiet, intimate gardens and large open spaces used for the summer show.
Perhaps the most notable feature is the statue, ‘the bringer of peace’, which was erected on the site by Sydney Simmons and dedicated to the memory of Edward VII on 7 May 1910, the day following the King’s death. The house contains a café which complements the extremely busy play area set in front of the house.
Entrances can also be found on Friern Barnet Lane and Torrington Park.
History
This has been the site of Friern Barnet Manor House since the 16th century and home to the Knights Hospitalier in the middle ages.
The name Friary Park was adopted in the 1870's and the park opened to the public in 1910.
Management
Friary Park is a fine example of an Edwardian park and an undoubted asset to the local community. In keeping with the design, location and history, our vision to maintain the park as a relatively formal park, kept to a high standard which local people can be proud to be associated with.
The current emphasis on informal recreation is to be maintained, with bowls the only organised sport. Further investment will be sought for the play and youth facilities and we will reverse the decline in the historic and horticultural features of the park.
The Council will continue engagement with the local community to galvanise public support for the park and ensure it serves the needs of the community now and in the future.
