Description
Formal Edwardian park with sports facilities and a memorial garden with an ornamental pond. The park also has an old fountain and avenues of London plane trees. Two public rights of way run across the site.
Entrances can also be found on Shirehall Lane, Park View Gardens and Cheyne Walk via a footbridge. From Hendon Central Underground Station turn left onto Queens Road and the park is located after 100 metres on the right hand side.
History
The park was originally part of a medieval estate know as the Steps Fields and owned by the Goodyer family. From 1868 till 1903 it was owned by the Kemp family when Hendon Council opened the park to the public. Hendon Council became part of the larger London Borough of Barnet in April 1965.
Management
The vision for Hendon Park is to combine modern facilities for local people while maintaining and enhancing the Edwardian heritage of the park. The park has a five-year management plan which is reviewed annually.
We will continue engagement with the local community to galvanise public support for the park and ensure it serves the needs of the community now and in the future. For further information on joining the Friends of Hendon Park call the Greenspaces team on 020 8359 7820 or email: parks@barnet.gov.uk.
