Advice on the disposal of domestic asbestos

Residents concerned about asbestos in their homes should read the government leaflet on ‘Asbestos in Housing’ which gives information on the types of asbestos and its common uses.

For large amounts of asbestos cement, or for the removal and disposal of other types of asbestos from commercial premises, use an Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) approved contractor. ARCA keeps a list of members whose competence in the sampling and removal of asbestos has been tested.

It may be dangerous to disturb loose fibrous forms of asbestos and it is always best to seek advice on its removal.

You should ask to see the contractors current licence before the company starts work for you and a written quotation should be provided.

If you have asbestos or chemicals in your home you would like to dispose of you need to contact the City of London. It will collect a limited amount of domestic asbestos free of charge. Sheets of up to ten foot long can be handled.

It will ask you to complete an information form and will endeavour to collect within 12 working days. It can be contacted on tel. 020 7332 3433, or visit the City of London website to download a form.

Asbestos collected by the HWCDS must first be individually wrapped and sealed in sturdy polythene and labelled “ASBESTOS – DO NOT INHALE DUST”. Packaging must be secure enough to be handled without risk of the package puncturing or splitting.

Care must be taken when handling asbestos. Small amounts of asbestos-cement can be removed provided it does not have to be broken and the following precautions are taken:

  • Keep other people away from the work area
  • Wet the material (provided there is no contact with electricity) with water containing  a little washing-up liquid
  • Wash after completing work
  • Remove whole sheets or components do not break them up
  • Clean up any dust left behind with a damp cloth (not a vacuum cleaner) and seal it in a plastic bag.
