Noise complaints about businesses
Noise pollution
The Noise and Nuisance team and the Scientific Services team investigates noise complaints made about businesses.
Examples include:
- restaurant and take-away kitchens extraction systems
- air conditioning
- music in pubs and clubs where it affects neighbours
- construction and demolition outside of normal working hours
Enforcement notices are served where a noise nuisance under the Environment Protection Act 1990 has been witnessed.
The government is working towards a National Ambient Noise Strategy. It is carrying out noise mapping of the whole country as a first step. This involves computer modelling of road traffic, rail and aircraft noise together with other noise sources.
The Mayor of London is publishing an ambient noise strategy and will seek to work in partnership with the London boroughs to reduce noise levels in London.
The Scientific Services Team is involved in meetings on this noise work with the government, other London boroughs and the Greater London Authority.
