Asbestos waste disposal

You can take cement bonded asbestos waste from your own households to the Hornsey Street Re-Use and Recycling Centre at Hornsey Street, Islington, London N7 8HU, where it will be disposed of safely.

Important - please note:

  1. Always contact the Hornsey Street Re-Use and Recycling Centre supervisor on 020 8884 5645 first to check there is space in the asbestos container (the licence does not allow them to store asbestos outside the container).

  2. Tell the supervisor how much asbestos waste you have to dispose of e.g. number of sheets or number of sacks.

  3. Before taking the asbestos waste to the recycling centre, ensure that it is double wrapped in thick polythene sheeting and fully sealed with strong tape, or alternatively in thick plastic sacks if the pieces are small.

Take care not to break any material to fit it into a bag. Under no circumstances should you use a saw or disc cutter to reduce the size of the sheets as this will cause asbestos dust to be generated.

  4. Vehicles taking asbestos to the Hornsey Street Re-Use and Recycling Centre must be below the vehicle height restriction of 1.9 metres (6 feet).

  5. As an alternative the Corporation of London will collect free of charge, small quantities of hazardous waste from your home. Contact 020 7332 3433 during weekdays for this service. The service is mainly operated by a recorded message during office hours.

They will collect hazardous waste for disposal free of charge provided it does not amount to more than 125 square feet (11.5 square metres). For a fee the Corporation of London can also collect larger quantities which are difficult to handle or too large to transport to the recycling centre.
