Electronic and electrical equipment
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive
On 1 July 2007 the WEEE Directive will come into effect. The directive aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment by increasing re-use and recycling, and reducing the amount of WEEE going to landfill.
The directive is a piece of European environmental legislation and makes producers responsible for financing the collection, treatment, and recovery of waste electrical equipment, and by obliging distributors to allow consumers to return their waste equipment free of charge or allowing consumers to take the waste electrical equipment to a designated collection facility.
In Barnet a network of designated collection facilities will be placed at the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre, Summers Lane, North Finchley, N12 0RF, to collect the five categories of WEEE:
- Fridges and freezers
- White goods
- Gas discharge lamps (fluorescent tubes)
- Display equipment (CRTs)
- Small WEEE.
At Summers Lane we already collect fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes and display equipment. So from the 1 July we will also be separately collecting white goods and all small electrical items such as hair dryers, toasters and blenders.
There is no cost to Barnet Council in doing this, as the producers and distributors of electrical equipment will be paying for the collection from the site.
