Electronic and electrical equipment
Electrical Recycling
Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste. To make recycling these items easier, a number of recycling banks for electrical equipment have recently been installed across the borough. Items such as toasters, kettles, hairdriers, chargers, leads, old games consoles , to name a few, can be recycled at the following locations:
- Stapylton Road car park - EN5 4LN
- Barnet Lane, playing field entrance - EN5 2DN
- Great North Road, near railway bridge - EN5 1AB
- Osidge Lane, car park - N14 5DU
- Lodge Lane, car park - N12 8JJ
- Friern Barnet Library - N11 3DS
- Pursley Road - NW7 2DY
- Daws Lane, car park - NW7 4SL
- Edgware Road, Tesco Metro car park - HA8 0BE
The dimensions of the opening for these banks are 51cm x 52cm. Electrical items larger than this can be recycled at the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre.
On 1 July 2007 the WEEE Directive came into effect. The directive aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment by increasing re-use and recycling, and reducing the amount of WEEE going to landfill.
The directive is a piece of European environmental legislation and makes producers responsible for financing the collection, treatment, and recovery of waste electrical equipment, and by obliging distributors to allow consumers to return their waste equipment free of charge or allowing consumers to take the waste electrical equipment to a designated collection facility.
In Barnet a network of designated collection facilities are placed at the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre, Summers Lane, North Finchley, N12 0RF, to collect the five categories of WEEE:
- Fridges and freezers
- White goods
- Gas discharge lamps (fluorescent tubes)
- Display equipment (CRTs)
- Small WEEE.
To find out what happens to these items after we collect them, please visit our Where recyclables go page.
There is no cost to Barnet Council in doing this, as the producers and distributors of electrical equipment will be paying for the collection from the site.
