Recycling in schools

Pupils recycling paper and glass using their schools recycling bins.

Free recycling collections from schools

Every school in Barnet is entitled to a free recycling collection service. We provide green recycling wheeled bins for:

  • paper
  • tins, cans, foil and aerosols
  • glass bottles and jars
  • plastic bottles
  • cardboard
  • food and garden waste.

May Gurney empty the recycling bins every week. You will need to arrange internal collections. If you would like this service please think about the following things

  • Where will you put internal recycling bins e.g. in every classroom, office area, kitchen area, next to the litter bins etc?
  • What containers will you use for recycling e.g. cardboard boxes (recommended as a good example of re-use), unused litter bins?
  • How will you label the containers e.g. recycling posters designed by students?
  • How will you make everyone aware of the recycling scheme e.g. staff meetings, student assemblies, citizenship or PSHE lessons?
  • Don’t forget to work with the canteen/kitchen to ensure metal food cans, aluminium foil glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and cardboard are collected for recycling
  • Who will look after emptying internal bins e.g. classroom monitors, prefects, school council, environment club, caretaker or cleaners?

If your school is not yet recycling and would like to sign up or for further advice, please contact us using the contact details opposite.

If your school already has recycling facilities but they are not being used to full capacity we can help. Call the Waste and Sustainability Edcuation Officers using the contact details opposite.

Environmental Education

Our Waste Education Officers work alongside primary and secondary schools to engage children and young people on a variety of different environmental topics.

Watch Your Waste Project (primary schools)

Waste & Sustainability Officers work intensely with your school over a set period (dependent on the size of the school). They will carry out a number of assemblies. Each class receives a talk, workshop and Q&A session. The officers will spend time in the canteen at lunchtime discussing lunch waste with the staff and children. The school will receive a visit by one of the boroughs recycling lorries. The aims of the project are to increase your school’s recycling and reduce the school’s waste. This will save the school money, have a positive environmental effect and enable the school community to take the important messages learned out to the wider community.

Green Matters (secondary schools)

The Waste & Sustainability team have linked with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to create the Green Matters Project. The initial aim is to set up a comprehensive recycling scheme within the school and get the whole school community using it. When this is in place the Duke of Edinburgh participants can work on another environmental of their choosing.

Other schools work

We can visit your school to give talks and assemblies. We will tailor our talks to meet your school’s needs. The topics we cover include:

  • Waste and the 3Rs
  • Love Food Hate Waste
  • Composting and garden projects
  • Energy
  • Caring for the environment.

If your school would like one of the above talks, please contact us using the contact details opposite.

Great Taste Less Waste schools project

The council received funding from the North London Waste Authority to run a food waste education programme in Barnet primary schools. Six lucky schools recieved a fantastic performance from the Circus Takeaway theatre group which used magic, comedy and song to highlight the importance of reducing our food waste. Each of the schools are now working to reduce and compost their food waste as much as they can to act on the messages of the show.
