Reduce your junk mail
Up to 400 pieces of junk mail are delivered to your home every year. That's half a million tonnes every year in the UK!
Help to reduce rubbish and save yourself the nuisance of junk mail by taking the following steps:
1. Reduce unwanted addressed mail
Register free with the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) to have your name and address removed from up to 95% of mailing lists.
How to register:
- Tel: 0845 703 4599
- www.mpsonline.org.uk
or write to:

2. Stop non-addressed mail
Send your name and address to the Royal Mail Door to Door service who will then send you an opt out form to sign and return:
- Tel: 0845 7950 950
- Email: optout@royalmail.com
Or write to:

3. Stop flyers, leaflets and free newspapers
Make a ‘no junk mail’ sign for your front door or letterbox.
4. Leave mailing lists
Write, email or phone the companies and organisations whose mailing list you are already on and ask to be removed from their databases.
5. Avoid joining new mailing lists
When completing forms, remember to tick the box that allows you to decline further mailings or write to the company requesting no further correspondence.
You can also tick the box on the council's annual electoral registration form to opt out of having your name on the edited version of the electoral register (companies can buy this version to use for marketing purposes).
6. Sign up to online statements and bills
Many banks offer online banking and many utility companies offer electronic utility bills. Enquire with your bank and utility company.
And recycle!
Remember - if you can't prevent it, make sure you recycle it. Your junk mail can be recycled in your Black Box or Flats Recycling Bins.
