Recycling in houses information for developers

We provide a free weekly recycling collection for flats in the borough. Barnet’s Unitary Development Plan states that: “The recycling of waste will be promoted by ensuring that there is an adequate network of recycling facilities in the borough and by requiring the provision of recycling facilities as part of new commercial, industrial and leisure developments and residential estates.” (Policy Env4: Unitary Development Plan, page 29)

For all houses, and where there are twelve flats or less, the council's recycling contractor May Gurney provides each house or individual flat with two different recycling boxes.

Dimensions

We provide a 44 litre black box to collect paper, glass bottles and jars, textiles, shoes and engine oil, mobile phones and batteries weekly. The dimensions for a black box are:

  • length 57cms
  • width 40cms
  • height cms.

We also provide a 55 litre blue box to collect plastic bottles, cardboard, tins, cans, foil and aerosols. The dimensions for a blue box are:

  • lenth 62 cms
  • width 41 cms
  • height 35 cms.

A storage and collection area for the boxes should be provided, and its location should be discussed with the councils recycling contractors May Gurney (tel: 020 8371 3675) at the design stage. Recycling boxes are provided at no charge, and residents may request additional boxes of either colour. The blue boxes can be stacked on top of the black boxes, though some residents will prefer to place them side by side. Please ensure that your development plans allow space for these boxes.
