Say 'No' to abuse - for people with learning disabilities: 20 November 2009

This event was organised for people with learning disabilities to talk about abuse and to find out what to do if it happens to them. There were different groups for people to join to talk about how abuse happens in different places and with different people, and to talk about things that make it difficult to report abuse, as well as things that can make it easier. Around 60 people with a learning disability attended the event, which was a great success as everyone got involved in spreading the message of saying 'no' to abuse.

See Me! Hear Me! event for Deaf and hard of hearing people: 26 November 2009

The Network celebrates World Mental Health Day 2009

The Network held an event to celebrate World Mental Health Day and give people the opportunity to meet The Network Team and discuss the exciting new developments taking place within the service.

Valuing People Now  - Making it happen in Barnet -
Wednesday 30 September 2009

This interactive day for people with a learning disability, family carers and professionals was organised by the Learning Disability Partnership Board. The event was to tell people about the big ideas for the Partnership Board and the difference they will make for people with a learning disability and their carers. People had the chance to get involved through information sessions and workshops, and there were also information stalls about benefits and services available to people with a learning disability. The event was a great success, with around 200 people attending on the day.

Barnet Learning Disabiliy Parliament Launch -

The Barnet Learning Disability Parliament aims to support more people with a learning disability to have a say about the services they use and what is important to them. The launch event for this parliament took place at Hendon Town Hall, with all the MPs being sworn in and workshops taking place for people to discuss what they thought about issues such as health and employment. The MPs are based in various organisations or settings for people with learning disabilities, so that everyone can have their say on things that are important to them.

Event at National Gallery - 29 June 2009

The National Gallery opened its doors to disabled people and older people at a special free inclusive access evening.

The gallery lowered the hang of some highlight paintings in the collection to enable visitors using wheelchairs to examine key works at close distance. There was also BSL and lip speaking interpretation for deaf and hard of hearing visitors. The gallery demonstrated their ‘Art Through Words’ service  - a detailed verbal description of a focus painting, for blind and partially sighted visitors.  Other resources on offer included Braille, large print and raised line drawings.

Dementia Awareness Week - 5 - 11 July 2009

Led by the Alzheimer's Society, Dementia Awareness Week took place in England and Wales between 5 - 11 July 2009.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness of dementia and how to reduce your risk, and to raise vital funds to support people with dementia and their carers.

Happy healthy fun day for people with learning disabilities  - 23 June 2009

Barnet Learning Disabilities Partnership Board hosted the second Happy Healthy Fun Day - a great day out for people with learning disabilities at the Trinity Centre, 15 Nether Street, North Finchley.

Those who came along were able to take part in many activities such as:

Information was also available on health action plans and ways to stay fit and active.

A healthy light lunch and refreshments including a very popular juice bar were provided to all those who attended.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - 15 June 2009

Every year, world elder abuse awareness week is held to bring greater recognition of the mistreatment of older adults  and to highlight the need for appropriate action.

It is intended to give abuse and neglect of older adults a global relevance that will sustain and move prevention efforts forward throughout the whole year and years to come.

Various activities are held throughout the country to mark the day, and local organisations are encouraged to get involved by taking part in a fund raising activity, or simply getting together to chat over coffee. Art exhibition from The Space, 4 - 31 March 2009

Charity Ceilidh (Scottish dancing/barn dance) - 15 March 2009

Following the success of the 2008 event, the Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet, Councillor John Marshall hosted a night of fun and dancing to raise money for his two chosen charities for 2009, Barnet Carers' Centre and Chai Cancer Care.More information can be found on the Mayor of Barnet's charity appeal page (external link).

Carers health event  - 27 March 2009

Carers UK are working with the Mayor's Office and the Greater London Authority on carers' health. This event was an opportunity for carers to get their views across on:

Speakers were from The Mayor's Office and GLA people working on carers and health, as well as the London health sector and local authorities. There were also discussion groups for people to join.
