What do we do?
We work in close partnership with the health service and the voluntary sector to help vulnerable people lead lives which are as full and independent as possible.
Through self-directed support, we aim to promote the independence of adults who need support, enabling them to live safely in their own homes where possible, and to encourage their participation in the community. We provide a range of specific services that help residents and carers in meeting these aims.
We also provide information and advice to people about local care and support services. We are currently consulting on our strategy for information, advice, advocacy and brokerage services - we want to know what you think of the strategy and whether it addresses the right issues and targets those who need these services most. You can read the strategy on our consultation portal page (external link).

Your experience of adult social care services
In February 2012, all councils across England are taking part in the annual Department of Health survey of people who use adult social care services.
This survey will ask questions about any social care service that people might be receiving with funding through their local council. This can include people who receive a Direct Payment to arrange their own support services, and people living in care homes. The questions will ask about the impact that services have had on different parts of the person’s life, such as their general health and their social life.
The survey will be sent to a sample of around 1000 people who have been receiving a social care service or funding from the council since at least September 2011, so if one you or someone you know receives of these surveys around the beginning of February, please help us by answering the questions and sending the completed form back to us. Anyone who completes the survey can be entered into the prize draw to win a gift voucher for the shop of their choice.
The results will be sent back to the Department of Health to help them to gather data on the quality of social care services nationally. Barnet Council will also use the results to see how satisfied local residents are with their services, and to inform any changes or improvements to services in the future.
Paying for services
If you come to Adult Social Care and Health for support, you will have a financial assessment to see if you should contribute towards the cost of your care. We will give you advice about this when you contact us. See our Fairer Contributions Policy 2011-12: Oct 2011
(PDF:303KB) for more details.
Call our Fairer Contributions Helpline on 020 8359 7107 or email adultsocialservices@barnet.gov.uk if you have questions about contributions towards care services.
If you pay for your own services (whether or not the council help you to arrange them), it may be advisable for you to get independent financial advice to help you to meet the costs of your care in the future. See our information about paying for long term care.
Social care providers
In light of the changes that are happening in the social care sector to increase people's choice and control, it is important that social care providers and the local authority all work together to ensure that the level and type of services required are being delivered across the borough. With this in mind, we have created a new area of our website dedicated to organisations who provide social care services in Barnet.

Choosing support that is right for you is a big decision, and so Barnet's Care Directory is designed to help you and your family make the best choices to meet your needs. The directory is relevant to any adult in need of care who either receives support from the council or funds their own support.
