Personal Budgets and self-directed support

As part of the Delivering Choice and Independence Programme, we are making exciting changes to the way in which adults receive social care services.

We are supporting adults who require social care services to live more independent lives by providing:

  • greater control over the support they receive, and
  • a wider choice of support available.

Early in 2008, we helped ten people with a learning disability receive ‘self-directed support’. These people and their families told us that providing social care services in this way has both improved the support they receive and their quality of life.

Now people who need social care services because of a learning disability or a physical or sensory impairment will have the opportunity to choose self-directed support. This applies to adults who have had an assessment and qualify for a social care service. See more about the process of having self-directed support.

By summer 2009, this opportunity will be available to all people who need social care services.

What is self-directed support?

Self-directed support is currently for people with a learning disability or a physical or sensory impairment who have been assessed as needing long-term social care and support services. It puts them in charge of the decisions about:

  • what they want to achieve in life
  • how and where they live and
  • what social care and support services will enable them to do this.

We do this by providing people with a Personal Budget and working with them to produce a support plan which is based on the person’s wishes and goals. There is more information on government legislation regarding self-directed support and Personal Budgets available.
